Balzan Prize Ceremony 2007: 1 million euros.
Bruce Beutler (USA) and Jules Hoffmann (France), The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, and Acadmie des Sciences in Paris, he received one of four Balzan Prize 2007 for research in the field of innate immunity. The award has a budget of 1 million francs (€ 610,000).Foundation. They worked closely together to develop a new vision of the defense strategy displayed by animals across a wide spectrum molecular against infectious agents in evolution. His work has led to very promising medical applications. The ceremony took place today in Bern, Switzerland.
Infection. Number of molecules called led to the discovery of a family of membrane receptors (TLR Toll-like receptors) found in mammals and therefore have the understanding of innate immunity in
higher organisms to complete more. Bruce Beutler was the first in 1998, the gene responsible for one of the TLR to clone for septic shock. More than 10 TLRs have been subsequently identified in mammals.interactions between the organism and its environment were released later. The International Balzan Prize Foundation, founded in 1957, promotes culture, science and the most meritorious initiatives in favor of humanity, peace and brotherhood among peoples, irrespective of nationality, race or religion throughout the world.
Sciences, each for the current value of CHF 1 million. Each winner will have to set aside half of the prize for scientific work, preferably involving young scholars. The International Balzan Foundation also awards a prize at regular intervals for
