Atropine may be an alternative to compensation for the treatment of amblyopia in children

In this study at 47 clinical centers across the country, 1419 children under the age of seven years performed with visual acuity between 20/40 and 20/100 were randomized to receive either patching, also called occlusion or atropine.Their progress was followed for six months.Although initially the improvement in visual acuity in the lazy eye was slightly
higher in the group with the patch for six months, there was no significant difference in outcomes between those who have the eye strong patches treated and those treated with atropine decreased one percent in the strong eye. Both treatments were well tolerated, but atropine was the preferred treatment of a patient questionnaire after the first five weeks of treatment, where complete. Our results are important because previous retrospective case studies suggested atropine was less effective than patches, and was largely ineffective in children with poorer visual acuity, said Michael X.Repka, MD, lead study investigator and professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University.However, our study found atropine was as effective when visual acuity
was 20/100 in the eye more than the poor, as he was with 20/40 visual acuity. These preliminary results suggest the need for a prospective study which evaluates the effect of atropine on the levels of visual acuity worse than 20/100.
